Counseling and Your Insurance: Why In-Network Helps Keep Therapy Affordable

UB is In-Network with Many Chicago Area Health Insurance Plans. Click pic to view complete list.

Finding High Quality, In-Network Counseling Services Can Sometimes Be Challenging: UB is proud to provide comprehensive therapy services in Chicago and North Suburbs that are also affordable, primarily because of the many insurance plans UB is In-Network.

An example of In-Network cost savings, UB therapists are credentialed as a group and UB is a Preferred Provider of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois PPO. This means UB is able to offer our clients the in-network rate of coverage at any of our Illinois counseling offices in downtown Chicago, Chicago Ravenswood, Evanston and Libertyville. Rather than clients being charged UB’s usual rate of $150 for the first session and $125 thereafter, Blue Cross & Blue Shield members receive a discounted rate of $124.20 for the first session and $75.60 for every session thereafter.

Additionally, Blue Cross and Blue Shield typically offers generous mental health coverage as compared to other insurance companies. Most plans provide generous coverage for outpatient counseling and therapy services. Blue Cross & Blue Shield insurance members typically only pay between $7.56 to $37.80 per session depending on the plan purchased by the member’s employer. UB has an in-house billing service that checks clients’ benefits and submits and follows up on claims on behalf of the client.

Counseling and Insurance FAQ's:

Are my sessions really confidential?

Absolutely, but make sure you sign a privacy document related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA.) This ensures your Protected Health Information (PHI) is properly safeguarded.

Also you can further to restrict access to your PHI with a written specific request to your therapist. Remember that the therapist must grant your request for the information privacy agreement to be valid.

How do I find out if counseling is covered on my insurance?

Call the customer service number and ask about your outpatient mental health benefits (or look at your plan benefits online through your insurance company.)

What is typical insurance coverage?

Most plans will cover a portion of a certain number of visits per year. For example, a $25 co-pay for up to 25 sessions per year. PPO plans will offer increased coverage for in-network providers.

Know that if your plan covers 50%, it is 50% of the contracted rate, not the billed rate. Some plans require pre-authorization. The client can request it directly, or the therapist can contact the insurance company on the client's behalf.
