Highlights of Recent IMHCA Networking Event

Earlier this April UB hosted a networking event for counselors sponsored by the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association. The event was a wonderful opportunity for clinicians to meet and greet, as well as learn about updates on legislation and current professional issues and causes from IMHCA President, Kerry Thon, LCPC.

We also learned:

  • In the Surgeon General’s report on mental health, the National Action Agenda on Children’s Mental Health reported that 1 in 10 children and adolescents suffer from mental illness severe enough to cause impairment, while fewer than 1 in 5 of those ever get treatment.
  • Approximately 30% of Americans, or 52 million people, have had some type of alcohol, drug or mental health disorder in the past year. Depression is the most common mental health disorder, affecting 10% of the population.
  • A 1996 federal survey showed for every dollar spent on substance abuse treatment, $5.60 is returned in public savings from reduced use of welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and reduced crime and imprisonment.
