While the exposure certainly creates business opportunities, it is not without its perils. Writes Bertagnoli: "Privacy evaporates, as does image control. Contestants describe a funhouse mirror effect: unattractive parts of their personality are bloated, while positive aspects are slimmed down."

Contestants “have to struggle with: How do you live up to that image or not and portray yourself as who you really are?” Ms. Gerber says. Criticism from strangers can rattle the most balanced person: “They may feel embarrassed, hurt, humiliated—and there's no forum for them to change that public image.”
