| The Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association (IMHCA) is a division of the Illinois Counseling Association (ICA). IMHCA advocates for the rights of counselors in Illinois and is integral in lobbying for the LPC/LCPC credentials. For example, the Illinois Professional Counselor Licensing Act is up for renewal and if it doesn't pass, there would be no LPC or LCPC credential in IL. IMHCA is also instrumental in lobbying for LCPC's to be able to accept Medicare, do Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluations, and be eligible for other services that the LCSWs can do. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has extremely high membership and a strong lobbying presence, where the counseling associations are struggling in membership, which is very concerning for the professional counselor credentials. If you are in the counseling field, you can support IMHCA by doing the following: 1) Join IMHCA if you are not a member already. It is a division of ICA. Please make sure you are a member of ICA and have selected IMHCA as your division. You will receive information about public policy, licensure requirements, workshops and trainings, professional networking events, etc. http://www.imhca.org/
2) Join the Illinois Mental Health Professionals group on Linked In. You do not have to be an IMHCA member to do this. Just go to Linked In and to groups and type in the name of the group and request to join.
3) Follow @myimhca on Twitter
4) Contact Joyce Marter at

if you have contacts at schools or agencies that would be interested in informing staff and students about the benefits of IMHCA membership.
5) Talk to fellow counselors about the importance of IMHCA and encourage them to get involved in IMHCA

Finally, the Illinois Licensing Board is looking for two new members--an LPC and an LCPC that specialize in substance abuse or are school counselors. Apparently, the positions require that you attend 10 meetings per year in Springfield, so it's a significant commitment and you would need a flexible schedule to do that. Contact
